Dan Smiths Sub Arctic Odyssey - 500 kms alone on the Hess River
(Yukon territory)
In July 2025, join me as I embark on a formidable, once-in-a-lifetime venture: a solo canoe expedition across the majestic, wild Yukon landscape on the super remote Hess River.
This journey is not merely a personal challenge fuelled by my thirst for adventure, it is also a cause committed to the brave hearts who have served and continue to serve our nation.
I will be paddling solo in a 15 ft Canadian canoe with all the supplies and specialist equipment I will need for the 450 km trip through one of the most remote landscapes in the world.
The expedition, both very remote, and beautiful will take me through the untouched wilderness that only the Hess River in the Yukon territory can offer.
It spans hundreds of kilometers from the fast-paced technical whitewater rapids to the serene, glacier-fed waters with the constant risk of bears and mountain lions around every corner I will need to keep constantly on my guard for both the rapids and apex predators! Such as Grizzlies, Black bear and wolves.
By embarking on this expedition, I aim to highlight the strength and resilience of our armed forces who brave harsh conditions, much like the Yukon herself. My venture transcends personal ambition, mirroring the unseen battles fought by them and reminding me what our armed forces stand for - courage, resilience, and unflagging spirit.
